It is said, repetition is the mother of skill. Craftsmanship requires patience, artistic endeavor, and drive. Our roasters are a skilled, passionate, and patient lot, consistently creating the perfect roast. Roasting in small batches, using an extracting process we developed.
Our process to perfection
It took years to develop our roasting technique. The process was and remains iterative because we discovered there is a nuance, a flavour, a smoothness, a texture at various roasting temperatures and through this effort it became clear that the nuance is different among different species of bean.
We only select beans from current crops, from specific regions and from proven farms of respected and typically multi-generational farmers. Coloration, humidity and density are key factors and like wine are graded. The SCA scale is up to 100 and for Beaver Rock, only coffee scoring of 80 points or higher will meet our criteria and only accomplished through sample roasting, knowledge and an experienced palate.
Flavour profile
Light roasts will typically retain most of the bean flavour resulting in a complex taste that will be lighter in the body.
In a dark roast, much of the original flavour will disappear as the roasting process will have created a bold and rich body often leaving the coffee with traces of chocolate and bittersweet flavour. In medium roasts, much of the flavour is still retained from the original bean but a light toasty taste can be observed.
Caffeine Content
When based purely on weight, the caffeine content of all roast profiles stays relatively consistent during the roasting process.
There is often a misconception that darker roasts have a greater caffeine content because the taste is bolder. In fact, when measured by scoops, light roasts will actually have more caffeine than dark roasts simply because the light roast beans are denser and that translates to more weight per scoop of coffee.

As a small enterprise, it is increasingly important to differentiate, to keep the focus of your customers and prospects.
For Beaver Rock Roastery, differentiating means innovation, whether it’s products, services or technology.
Our innovation journey began as a result of aging and poorly designed packaging equipment. We set out to purchase new equipment but found only disappointment. Our criteria focussed on productivity, efficiency and flexibility. Looking forward, we wanted the ability to introduce automation to improve quality. One key requirement is the absolute need is to transition to packaging materials that are home compostable, to ease the burden on our landfill sites and improve the convenience factor.
Having excellent experience in retrofitting our aging equipment we set out to once again collaborate with Georgian College’s Innovation and Research Department. Our partnership has allowed us to co-develop a modular concept, expand on current market offerings and in the process create additional revenue by providing filtered single serve pods as a supplier to the North American market, a supply which typically originates overseas.
This spectacular collaboration gave us to access the amazing resources of Georgian and create an abundant learning experience for Beaver Rock, students and the College leadership. With the final stages of commissioning in sight, we created a modular state of the art machine unlike anything available in the marketplace. As a revenue expansion possibilities, we look to the future to commercialize this venture and deploy other concepts to the market.
Through this creation, we retain the Intellectual Property (IP) and gain notoriety as an Ontario based multi-disciplined enterprise. The collateral benefits are shared by Georgian, Beaver Rock and the City of Barrie. Considering that the project was: i) conceived and designed in Barrie, ii) fabricated in Barrie, iii) assembled and programmed in Barrie, and iv) commissioned in Barrie, signifies that our community offers absolutely every possible input and service necessary for a project of this complexity and creates evidence that Barrie can support businesses of every type.
